FOIL Vol. 2 - Roots
2003, Little More, Japan
Being the second issue of FOIL published by Masakazu Takei, the theme is a continuing off the first issue [no war]. Takashi Yasumura, Masami Akita, Katsumi Omori, Rinko Kawauchi, and Yoshitomo Nara are highlighting their personal works that showcase their “roots’ in their own creative field. You will see photography and art from these amazing creatives that end with a beautiful quote about how they view war and roots.
“Unfortunately, the war broke out. It means that Japan is to take part in the war. How much of our taxes will be spent for the war — the war in the name of world peace? What do they mean by 'national interests'? Isn't the war merely a struggle for concessions between politicians and big corporations? How many of citizens are against the war? I happened to be in Berlin the next day after the start of the war. There were over 10,000 students marching in a demonstration against war, starting in the morning of a weekday. I heard that schools were closed because of the outbreak of war.
It is frustrating, embarrassing, sad, but we will not give up. We are absolutely against war. I believe that our generation can stop the war. We shall not make the same mistake as in the past.
The theme of this issue is 'ROOTS’. I believe that we have to pass on to our next generation what we were given by our ancestors. I wonder that humankind will really be extinct if we carry on like this. We should be able to do something from each of our positions.
Following publication of FOIL vol.1, many readers returned their messages. I was happy to read their cards, saying that they took it as an opportunity to reconsider their way of living. I am not asking to go on a demonstration or a petition drive. There are lots of things we can do in everyday life.
Never give up!”

“ROOOOOOOOOOOOOOTS•••••••.
So, why am I the way I am now?
Why have I got no interest in seas but want to go climbing in the mountains?
Why do I believe that the view from the top will be the Great Plains, not blue waters?
Why do I rock my body to Rock'n Roll?
What was I like when I was a child?
I love songs that come through leaden clouds more than through sunny blue sky.
I feel soothed, crouching around a fire, under a starry sky.Where the hell did I come from?
I don't know the answer I won't know it forever. And it goes on, to the end of time.....”
